Ayra Ecosystems of Ecosystems Model

ABSTRACT: Digital wallets and cryptographically-verifiable digital credentials represent powerful new tools for establishing digital trust relationships. However they are already facing the problem of how a credential issued in one digital trust ecosystem can be accepted in a different one.

Tackling this problem in a decentralized architecture that empowers every ecosystem to self-govern, yet still enable cross-ecosystem interoperability, requires a new layer of digital public infrastructure. This layer resembles DNS—and needs similar global multi-stakeholder governance—but also differs from DNS in several crucial ways.

The paper explains why this layer needs an “ecosystem of ecosystems” model to reflect the reality that many trust relationships are non-hierarchial. It then proposes that the steps to build and deploy this layer directly parallel those required to stand up DNS 50 years ago. This includes the critical role of forming and deploying the first trust clusters—a role the Ayra Association is designed to fill as a neutral international Swiss nonprofit association.
